When you say Christmas, you automatically think of butter cookies. So why not make them at home instead of the one that they sell you in tins? And even elevate them and add some chocolate. These turn out absolutely amazing!
Ingredients You’ll Need for Butter Cookies
- Unsalted butter
- Granulated sugar
- Salt
- Egg yolks
- All-purpose flour
- Milk
- Vanilla extract (and almond extract for funfetti flavor)
How to Make Butter Cookies
1. Turn on your oven to 350 F.
2. Use the paddle attachment on your stand mixer, and beat your sugar, butter, and salt together in a bowl.
3. Stir in your vanilla and egg yolks.
4. Mix in your flour, then pour in some of your milk, mixing and adding more little by little until it’s light enough to go in your pipe.
5. Pour in a 16 inch piping bag with a big open end ( I use the Ateco 826 or 827 for this recipe).
6. Form rounds of dough using your pipe on 2 dry baking pans.
7. Cook each pan separately in your oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
8. Leave it chill on your baking pan for 5 minutes, then let it fully chill on a cooling rack. Keep in a sealed container.
9. In case you want to submerge it in white chocolate or regular chocolate, chop 10 ounces of chocolate and melt it in your microwave on 50% power and mix it every 20 seconds, or use chocolate melts such as Ghirardelli, or white chocolate melts.
10. Submerge half of your cookies in your chocolate and let it drip off, and glide the bottom on the side of the bowl, then place them on parchment paper. Quickly put your sprinkles on top and allow to settle.
Do I Have to Pipe them Out Into Rounds?
This recipe can also be used for slice-and-bake cookies. If you’re planning on making them, make two logs out of your dough, cover in wax paper, and cool until solid, cut into thin slices, and cook in your oven.
Can I Freeze These Cookies?
This recipe holds up well frozen, you can freeze it for over a month. They last 1 week at room temperature.

Butter Cookies
When you say Christmas, you automatically think of butter cookies. So why not make them at home instead of the one that they sell you in tins?
Ingredients
- 226g (1 cup) of softened unsalted butter
- 140g (2/3 cup) of granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 2 egg yolks*
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract**
- 283g (2 cups) of all-purpose flour
- 2 to 4 teaspoons of milk
- Candy melts or chocolate (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together butter, sugar and salt until combined.
- Mix in egg yolks and vanilla.
- Add flour and mix until crumbly then add in 2 tsp milk, if needed add in another 1 - 2 tsp milk for a more pipe-able consistency - add as little as possible for less spreading though.
- Transfer to a 16-inch piping bag fitted with a very large open star tip (I like the Ateco 826 or 827 here, smaller tips won't work for piping this thick batter don't attempt it).
- Pipe dough into rounds onto two ungreased baking sheets (if you normally have issues with cookies spreading chill them for 30 minutes on baking sheet before baking).
- Bake one sheet at a time in preheated oven until golden brown on bottom, about 12 - 16 minutes.
- Let cool on baking sheet 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- * Using room temperature egg yolks helps your dough pipe more smoothly.
- ** To achieve a funfetti favor, that is submerged in white chocolate with sprinkles on top, when adding your vanilla extract, mix in 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract also.
