- Russet potatoes
- Vidalia onion (or yellow onion)
- Unsalted butter
- All-purpose flour
- Salt
- Pepper
- Whole milk
- Garlic powder
- Nutmeg
- Sharp cheddar cheese
- Freshly chopped parsley
How to Make Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe
1. Spray a 7×11-inch baking dish with cooking spray, and preheat the oven to 400 F.
2. Alternate slices of potatoes and onions in the baking dish (a handful of potatoes, then onions, and so on).
3. To make the sauce, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and sprinkle in the flour. Cook the flour in the butter until slightly golden, about 1 minute.
4. Whisk in the milk, garlic powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Cook until thickened.
5. Remove the sauce from heat and add the shredded cheddar. Stir until fully melted.
6. Pour the sauce evenly over the potatoes and onions. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 90 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
7. Remove the foil and turn the oven to broil until slightly golden on top, about 2-3 minutes Keep an eye on the potatoes, they can easily burn under the broiler.
Can I Make Scalloped Potatoes Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can assemble the casserole, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate it a day in advance. You can also freeze it and thaw it out in the fridge the night before baking it.
Potatoes might darken if not baked right away, so make sure they are fully covered with the sauce to prevent this.
How to Store Scalloped Potatoes?
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the microwave until warmed through.
You can freeze the baked potatoes as well. Let them come to room temperature and place them in an airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator the night before, let them come to room temperature and reheat in the microwave. The sauce might separate a little but will still taste amazing.

- 1 large sweet Vidalia onion (or yellow onion), sliced
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
Instructions
