How to Make John Wayne Casserole
1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and preheat the oven to 350 F.
2.Make the crust: remove the biscuits from the can and press them into the bottom of the baking dish to make a crust. Make sure to cover the bottom and halfway up the sides of the baking dish.
3. Bake this crust for 15 mins until lightly golden around the edges.
4. Cook the ground beef filling: while the crust is baking, brown the ground beef in a large skillet until no longer pink. Mix in the water and taco seasoning and simmer for 5 minutes or until almost all the liquid has evaporated. Transfer to a bowl.
5. Make the creamy sauce: mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, half of the sliced onion, 1 tsp minced garlic, half of the shredded cheddar, and 1 tsp parsley flakes in a medium-sized bowl until well combined. Set aside.
6. Saute the veggies: wipe clean the skillet where you cooked the ground beef, and add 2 tsp of olive oil. Saute the remaining sliced onion, sliced bell pepper, and minced garlic until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes.
7. Assemble the casserole: remove the crust from the oven and top with the cooked ground beef.
8. Place the tomato slices evenly over the ground beef filling.
9. Spoon the sauteed veggies evenly over the ground beef.
10. Sprinkle the diced jalapenos over the veggies.
11. Spread the creamy sauce over the veggies.
12. Top everything with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese, and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown.
