Ingredients
Cake:
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup strong coffee
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 8 oz powdered sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
- A pinch of salt
Chocolate Frosting:
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
- 1 tbsp warm water
- 1 tbsp coffee-flavored liqueur
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9-inch round pans.
- Mix dry ingredients: sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Create a well in the center.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla. Pour into dry ingredients and beat until smooth.
- Divide batter into pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
- For cream cheese frosting, beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, and salt. Spread on the bottom cake layer, top with another layer.
- For chocolate frosting, melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in cocoa, water, and liqueur. Remove from heat, beat in powdered sugar. Add water if needed. Frost the cake, let set, slice, and enjoy!
