HOW TO MAKE CONEY ISLAND HOT DOG SAUCE
This is how to make the most amazing Coney Island hot dog sauce at the comfort of your home.
Step 1. Sear and brown your ground beef in a pan or pot. Stain any extra juices.
Step 2. Throw in your minced onions.
Step 3. Sprinkle in your measured spices and stir.
Step 4. Now, spoon in your tomato paste, pepper, and salt.
Step 5. To finish off, pour in your 2 cups of water and cook for 1 to 2 hours until you reach the desired consistency. This hot dog sauce is typically on the runny side.
CAN YOU FREEZE CONEY ISLAND HOT DOG MEAT SAUCE?
Of course. After your sauce is done, allow it to fully chill, then place in a freezer bag.
It can be frozen for around 3 months. To reheat it, defrost it first, then microwave it or place it over the stovetop in a pan.
CAN YOU USE KETCHUP INSTEAD OF TOMATO PASTE?
Yes, however, ketchup contains a good amount of acidity and sweetness which will tamper with the flavor a bit. I would only recommend using it if you can’t find any tomato paste.
RECIPE TIPS:
1. Give the dish a taste after you add the spices in order to regulate it to your liking, like adding more cayenne in case you’d like a bit more of a kick.
2. Stir your sauce occasionally while it’s cooking to prevent it from burning and clinging into the bottom.
3. Get creative with the toppings. My personal preference is minced jalapeno peppers or relish. Cheese, especially cheddar, is always good as well.
